How To Treat & Prevent Scalp Build Up

What is scalp build up?

Scalp build up is when substances from hair products and sweat begin to accumulate over time. This often looks like flaking, dandruff, dry, and brittle hair. These hair challenges are easy to manage, prevent, and treat.

What causes scalp build up?

In between wash days products pile up and often cause dryness over time. Products like shampoos, conditioner, oils, gels. mousse, and hair creams can all cause scalp build up.

Not Cleansing Properly

Skipping wash days for a long period of time will result in accumulation of products. This may cause the scalp to become irritated and flake. Clarifying your scalp with our Shampoo & repairing with our conditioner at least twice a month will remove impurities while restoring your hair strands.

Sweat and oil production

Our scalp produces natural oil just like our body produces sweat. Some people experience oil and sweat production more than others. An excessive amount of oil and sweat also results to scalp build up.

How to treat Scalp Build Up?

There are many ways to treat scalp build up. Here are some tips and home remedies you can add to your wash day routine.

1. Cleanse your scalp with a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos work to specifically remove scalp build up from products, oils, and sweat. Natural Gemz Acai Berry Sulfate Free Shampoo helps properly cleanse the scalp by lifting product build up.

2. Detox your scalp Apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay are two amazing ingredients that will remove those impurities from your scalp. These ingredients can be used together as a hair mask or separately.

Use one part water, and one part ACV. Use it as a rinse after cleansing your hair. Activate bentonite clay with water or ACV. Mix thoroughly then coat your hair with this hair mask on damp or clean hair. Allow mask to sit for up to 25 minutes and add sit under a hooded dryer for maximum benefits. Rinse out and follow up with your shampoo and conditioner.

Use a shampoo massaging brush to massage your scalp and thorough lift all dirt and build up while shampooing your hair.

Prevention

Prevention involves proper care and a consistent routine. 

1. Maintain a haircare routine. Shampoo and condition every 7-10 days or at least 2x monthly to remove excess dirt and products.

After refreshing your style with water in between wash days seal the moisture back in with a couple drops of our Nourishing oil. Focus on your ends only. Avoid adding excessive and heavy creams on your scalp in between wash days.

Limiting excessive product use, cleansing the scalp as needed with clarifying and nourishing shampoo and conditioners, as well as maintaining a healthy hair care routine.
